Monty, a Dog Gone Dragon was constructed by our friend John Andrews with JRA welding, located in Gainesville, FL. The sculpture was conceived in 2012, the year of the Dragon, and it was inspired by his friends’ dog Monty. Monty passed away unexpectedly from cancer the day Andrews left for ArtPrize 2012. Andrews, after seeing his friends so distraught, decided to immortalize Monty in the form of a dragon.

Monty, a Dog Gone Dragon is a 100% recycled “green” sculpture that was constructed entirely from recycled shipping containers. He took 1800 hours to construct over 44 weeks, and has over 12,500 scales that were individually hand cut. There is a large metal heart placed inside of the sculpture to represent Monty the dog’s sweet and playful personality.

John Andrews entered Monty, a Dog Gone Dragon into the ArtPrize 2013 contest located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He placed in the Top 25.

UPDATE: John Andrews, creator of Monty, A Dog Gone Dragon, has begun a new project. The construction process is very similar to the two dragons he has made, but, rather than base his newest project on fantasy, he is making a red shouldered hawk. Oddly, as he is building it, other hawks have been showing up to keep an eye on him! Some pictures of the work in progress are below.
