Item # M60711
This scenic cameo is set in a pinch back metal bezel. "Pink back is a combination of copper and zinc which make a very convincing gold substitution. Christopher Pinchbeck, born in 1670 and lived until 1732 discovered the alloy. It was used quite extensively as a durable yet less costly metal than gold, but fell out of favor during the mid-nineteenth century after 9kt. gold was legalized. Quite scarce today, it has become highly collectible and is admired for it's own attributes. Pieces that date after about 1840 are rarely true pinchbeck". Which makes this large cameo quite collectible. It measures 2 1/4" x 2" and is a pin with additional loop on the back for a pendant. The material is conch shell and the carving has captured the fluidity of the dance. Circa 1880.
